Rod Heitschmidt, Livestock and Range Research
Laboratory (LARRL) Leader gave the group an
overview of the Fort Keogh research facility.
Twenty two people attended the meeting.
Nicole McClain, newly hired coordinator, was
introduced by chair Don Youngbauer.  Nicole
brings a great deal of experience in grant
writing,  grant management and watershed
coordination to the group.
Matt Rinella, Rangeland Scientist, took time out
of his busy day to give the group a tour of the
facility.
Jennifer Muscha, Rangeland Scientist III,
explained the workings of the greenhouse.
Roger Muggli, T & Y Irrigation Manager, told the group about the fish by-pass being built on
the Tongue River.  Ladders for fish species like trout and salmon don’t work for warm-
water fish, which swim around, rather than over, obstacles. So the project partners are
building a fish-bypass canal around the 12-Mile Dam on the Tongue River, a major
tributary of the Yellowstone. The canal will help at least seven species of warm-water fish
regain access to almost 50 miles of their native spawning habitat. Meanwhile, the dam will
continue to divert irrigation water to about 300 farm families and 9,400 acres of thirsty
crops.
